Great Big Guide To Lubricants

Why should I use personal lubricants?

Have you ever eaten a great slice of crusty bread without slathering it with real butter? It’s not that you can’t eat that slice of bread, or that the bread isn’t tasty in and of itself; it’s just that you’re missing something, or that it tastes a little boring on its own.

When it comes to sexual play, using a decent lubricant is like putting butter on your slice of bread.
Lubricants’ most basic and essential attribute is slickness, which promotes a more pleasant and delightful experience.

This is valuable in and of itself, but it doesn’t stop there. Lubricants can produce a variety of experiences.
To learn everything you need to know about personal lubricants, read my guide.

The different types of lubricants available

Water Based:

Because they have so many benefits and so few drawbacks, a good bottle of water-based lubricant should be the mainstay in your toy box.
Water is used as the base for water based lubricants, as the name implies.
After that, more components are added to create a lubricant with slickness and longevity.

When should a water-based lubricant be used:

Water-based lubricants are the most flexible lubricants on the market, as they are acceptable and safe for the majority of sexual activities, including vaginal, anal, and oral sex.
Condoms and all types of sex toy materials are also safe to use with water-based lubricants.
Water-based lubricants have a wide range of viscosity.
Because they are water-based, they can be made thicker or thinner depending on how much water is used during the manufacturing process; some are very runny, while others are more gel-like.

When should I refrain from using water-based lubricants?

Water Based Lubricants are soluble in water.
(They are easily dissolved and washed away in water.)
As a result, they can’t be used in the bath or shower.

My top picks for water-based lubricants are:

Silicone Lubricants:

When should you choose a Silicone based lubricant:

Silicone lubricants are the workhorses of the lubricant world, and they have a distinct feel from water-based lubricants.
Water-based lubes are slicker, whereas silicone-based lubes are silkier.
Silicone lubricants coat the skin in a water-resistant coating of velvety smooth slickness.
Silicone is not absorbed, and unlike water-based lubricants, it does not evaporate or dry out.
Because the anus is not self-lubricating, having to stop frequently to reapply a water-based lubricant might ruin the mood, silicone lubricant is one of the most long-lasting lubricants available, making it suitable for longer sessions and for use during anal sex.

Because silicone lubricants are generally safe to use in and around the vaginal area, they are also appropriate for use during intimate body massage (Unlike oil.)
They’re also great for playing in the bath or shower because they don’t dissolve in the water.
(Silicon lubricants must be broken down and washed away with soap.)
Silicone lubricants are compatible with latex, thus they can be used with condoms and sparkling latex apparel.
Silicone lubricant can also be used to lubricate metal, and a few drops on a squeaky door hinge will solve the problem.
More aesthetic applications include shaving with silicone lubricant and rubbing a few drops into the tips of your hair for a shiny, frizz-free appearance.

When should I avoid using a silicone lubricant:

Silicone lubricants should not be used with silicone sex toys since they may react with the material, making your object greasy on the surface.
Glass, metal, and ceramic sex toys, on the other hand, are entirely safe to use with silicone lubricant.
Because silicone stains, you should avoid using silicone lubricant if you are wearing expensive clothing or have laid down your nice bed linens.
It will leave oily stains on your clothing, which brings me to my final point: if you’re in a hurry, don’t use silicone lubricant.
Silicone lubricant is resistant to water and must be broken down and washed away with soap.
This usually entails a brief shower after use in order to avoid ruining your clothes or feeling slick for the rest of the day.

Oil Based Lubricants:

When do I need to use an oil-based lubricant?

‘Not very often,’ says the answer.
(Please see my next paragraph for further information.)
However, oil-based lubricants are appropriate for use during male masturbation, body massage (avoiding female genitals), and anal sex in a select situations.

When should I avoid using lubricants that contain oil:

Lubricants based on oil are not vaginal friendly.
They can alter the PH of the vaginal environment, and because they tend to sit on top of the skin rather than absorb, they can trap and harbour bacteria that can cause vaginal infections or urinary tract infections.
Furthermore, oil-based lubricants are incompatible with condoms, latex, diaphragms, or rubber, as oil weakens and degrades these materials.
Oil-based lubricants are likewise prohibited for use with any rubber or silicone-blend jelly sex toys for identical reasons.
They can harm the surface of these materials, which can lead to damage to the toy’s surface, making it feel tacky.

My top picks for oil-based lubricants are:

Yes Oil Based Lubricant. (My review)

Hybrid Lubricants:

Hybrid lubricants are a mix of silicone and water-based lubricants.
Typically, 90 percent of the product is water-based, and 10% is silicone, with minor variances.

When do I need to use a Hybrid Lubricant?

If you enjoy the slippery feelings that water-based lubricants produce but don’t want a lubricant that dries out as quickly as pure water-based lubricants, a hybrid lubricant is the way to go.

When should I use a hybrid lubricant instead of a conventional lubricant:

Because hybrid lubricants contain silicone (about 10%), it’s best to be cautious and handle them like silicone lubricants.
This implies you should avoid using them with silicone mixed or jelly sex toys, though you may always do a little patch test to see how your lubricant reacts with your sex toy.
Hybrid lubricants behave most like water-based lubricants and, as a result, are nearly as useless in the bath or shower, as 90% of the lubricant dissolves.

My top picks for hybrid lubricants are:

Speciality Lubricants:

The lubricants that add a little something more are found in this category.
You will be spoiled for choice with the variety of specialty lubricants available:

Lubricants with Flavors:

These lubricants, which are almost often water-based but can also be oil-based, are great for oral sex.
Flavored lubricants are available in a wide range of flavours, from fruity (cherry, strawberry, apple) to sweet (bubblegum, vanilla, chocolate, mint) to the more exotic (Bacon, whiskey).
Sweeteners are frequently added, and I advise against using lubricants sweetened with aspartame.
Another thing to keep in mind is that flavoured lubricants tend to dry tacky, which is unpleasant, although there are a few reputable brands out there that offer pleasant-tasting lubricants that don’t dry sticky.
Sliquid is an excellent example.

Lubricants for warming and cooling:

These lubricants are typically water-based and contain menthol, capsaicin, or other chemicals that provide the skin a moderate cooling or warming sensation.
Blowing on the skin after applying these lubricants enhances the impact.
When applied to the nipples and genitals, these lubricants are perfect for delicate sensory play and can feel nice.
Always check the ingredients to make sure you’re not allergic to anything that’s been added.
You can also buy freezable lubricants, which can partially freeze into a loose slush and feel incredibly chilly when applied to the skin after being placed in the freezer.

Lubricants that are realistic:

These lubricants are frequently creamy coloured or opaque, and are designed to appear and feel like real semen.
Water-based or hybrid lubricants are the most common.
Spunk Lube Original, Liquid Silk, and Bad Dragon Cum Lube are some instances of realistic lubricants.

Coloured Lubricants:

From glow-in-the-dark to baby pink, there’s something for everyone.
Colored lubricants are intended to add a sense of fun and amusement to the bedroom.
Spunk Lube Pink and Cosmic Bear Lubricant are two examples.

Those are the primary categories of personal lubricants now available on the market.
Now that you know which lubricant to use for your specific needs, let’s have a look at some other considerations, such as potentially harmful substances and what to avoid.

Ingredients to stay away from:

Parabens:

Parabens are commonly used in cosmetics as a germicide or preservative, extending the shelf life of the product.
Parabens, on the other hand, are harmful to the human body.
According to research, parabens affect hormones (they resemble estrogens), and studies have linked parabens to cancer.
The presence of high amounts of parabens in breast cancer tissues does not establish that parabens caused the cancer, but it does reveal that the human body does not break down these compounds.
Parabens have also been connected to allergies and rashes and have been shown to reduce sperm count and cause complications with foetal development.
Despite the lack of clear evidence, some nations have already banned parabens in cosmetics and children’s products.

Methylparaben, Ethylparaben, Propylparaben, and Butylparaben are the most prevalent parabens.
If you’re concerned about parabens, avoid lubricants that include them because the mucous membranes in the vagina and anus are quite good at absorbing them.
There are numerous paraben-free lubricants available.

Glycerine and Glycerol

Because it is a cheap chemical, it is frequently found in inexpensive lubricants as a lubricator or lubricant.
When consumed internally, glycerin is typically regarded as “not good.”
The issue is that most research is contradictory.
Some claim that glycerin can induce or exacerbate yeast infections, while others claim that it has no effect on yeast infections but is harmful because it dries up mucous membranes, which can lead to other illnesses.
Glycerine is a lubricant that can be found in a variety of items.
Because it’s found in laxative suppositories, avoiding it in anal lubricants is also a wise idea.
Personal lubricants do not require the addition of glycerine.
There are better, safer alternatives, and quality ingredients are used by good manufacturers.
Glycerin-free lubricants should be avoided.

Aspartame:

This is an artificial sweetener that is commonly included in flavoured lubricants.
This chemical has been linked to a variety of negative effects, including headaches, nausea, anxiety, and more.
Despite the fact that this substance has been allowed by the FDA, it is commonly regarded as something that should be avoided.
Instead, look for lubricants that have been sweetened with natural substances.

Brands of lubricant that I suggest

Sassy Sliquid

Pjur Comfort Anal Glide Lubricant for Back Doors

Spunk Lube’s product line

Consumers are becoming more conscious and demanding of the products they put into their bodies, and as a result, more companies selling high-quality, body-safe lubricants are cropping up.
The Sliquid line is one of my favourites.
They are generally free of all of the harmful substances listed above (however their flavoured lubricants do include aspartame.) and of excellent quality.
Sliquid makes some of the most body-friendly products available.
Yes is another company that genuinely cares about its customers.
Years of research have gone into discovering the most body-friendly, natural substances to use in their lubricant line.
