The We-Vibe Sync Review

There’s a reason We-Vibe is one of my absolute favorite companies: They listen to their customers and they actually innovate. The brand new We-Vibe Sync is evidence of their commitment to those ideals.

I wasn’t a fan of the past iterations of the We-Vibe flagship “couples vibrator”. The We-Vibe 2 was weak and cumbersome, and the We-Vibe 3 was more of the same. Sure, it was a cool idea – a hands-free device that you could wear during penetrative sex that wasn’t a cock ring. Alas, it was lacking in execution. When We-Vibe rolled out the We-Vibe 4, then 4 Plus, we really saw some big changes. They changed the shape of the internal arm, replaced the grippy silicone with a more velvety formulation, and added app integration. Still, the motor wasn’t quite up to snuff, and the form factor wasn’t comfortable for every body.

Enter: The We-Vibe Sync

We-Vibe kept the form the same for the newest generation of their flagship product but made two massive changes: They installed a considerably stronger motor in the external arm and put in a double hinge between the two arms. The hinges make it much more comfortable to wear if you’re someone who prefers not to have a ton of pressure on your clit or your vulva, or if you need more pressure on your G-spot. I think it was an ingenious move.

So, let’s talk about the motors. Are they as strong as the We-Vibe Tango? I don’t think so. Not individually, anyway. Remember, there are two motors here: One in the external/clitoral arm, and one in the internal/G-spot arm. The internal arm is so small that it would be impossible to put an ultra-powerful, rumbly motor there. It’s just not realistic.  The external arm is the one bringing the power and intensity, the likes of which we haven’t seen in any previous We-Vibe couples design. At lower speeds, it’s definitely rumbly, but becomes buzzier as you increase the intensity.

We-Vibe Sync in Use

Alllllrighty, here’s the thing: I don’t really like this the way they meant for it to be used, but I love it the way that I’ve been using it. Let me explain.

Sync With a Partner

The We-Vibe Sync is a “couples vibrator” intended to be used during penetrative vaginal sex. Yes, it’s heteronormative. No, I don’t agree with that. (The fact is, any vibrator can be a couples vibrator when a couple is using it together.) I also do not like to use it this way.

Here’s what happened when I used the Sync during penetrative sex:

Step One: Turn it on, pair it with the iPhone app, and adjust it until it’s comfortably in place.

Step Two: “Babe, I don’t think this is going to fit.”

Step Three: *tentative thrusts*

Step Four: “Yeah, this is–”

Step Five: “I’m taking it out.”

It was too tight a fit. People may claim that there’s no such thing, but I am here to tell you that they are wrong. Furthermore, the silicone grabbed onto the condom my partner was wearing and caused some uncomfortable chafing. No bueno.

Of course, it’s worth noting that I am not known for liking large insertable toys. I can’t fit the Vixen Maverick in my vagina, but others can take it with little to no warm-up. If I were able to take larger toys, then a tight fit might not be an issue.

When reached for comment, Mr. MarvyDarling simply said, “Nah.”

Sync Solo

Now this? This is golden.

While the Sync proved to make my vag too tight a squeeze for real dick action, it actually worked splendidly with realistic dildos like the Tantus Uncut #2. It was definitely a tight fit, don’t get me wrong – but I prefer clenching to thrusting if I’m focusing on clitoral vibrations anyway. With the Uncut #2 inside and the Sync wedged right up against it, I was able to go hands-free and focus on controlling the Sync via the We-Connect app. In four years of reviewing, it was the first time I’d had a hands-free orgasm.

I also tried using the Sync on its own as a warm-up toy. After adjusting the hinges and turning it on, I popped the internal arm in and made sure my underwear and pelvic floor were able to hold it in place. Then, I hung around for a while, messing with different speeds and patterns, and flexing my pelvic floor to get more stimulation. It was at this point that I really noticed how much weaker the internal arm is. Even so, it was a fun way to warm-up and left my hands free to do other things.

It’s definitely worth noting that with both motors turned all the way up, it was easy to hear the toy through my pants, even when I was seated on my padded desk chair. It’s not exactly whisper quiet. I wouldn’t recommend it for clandestine vibe use outside the home, even with the subtlety of app integration.

Let’s talk about the app, because until I actually sat down to write this, I thought it was confusing and faulty. I now recognize that I was just using it incorrectly. I think the problem was that I kept trying to figure it out when my blood flow was, shall we say, not heading in the direction of my brain.

When you first open the app and sync it with your Sync (or Rave, Nova, etc.) via Bluetooth, it enters Touch Mode, which is easy and intuitive. You can adjust each motor independently, and it automatically starts in steady vibration mode. In order to change modes, you swipe to the left or right. You can even create custom modes using a mix of pre-determined patterns, intensity adjustments, and time intervals.

The app is also great for folks in long distance relationships or those who enjoy giving their partner control. You can connect with a partner anywhere in the world provided they have an app-compatible phone or tablet and an internet connection. I’m sure this feature would be great for webcam performers, too.

I personally prefer the app over the included remote and I actually have fewer connectivity problems with the app. But other reviewers, especially plus size folks, found that they had trouble getting their app to connect. Beyond body size, your mileage may vary based on your labia. While my outer labia do hide much of my vulva when my legs are together, I don’t have trouble accessing my clit with just a tiny bit of spread. This is definitely yet another design made with thinner bodies and less prominent labia in mind.

Pros and Cons

Let’s get the negatives out of the way first: It may not work as well for people of size or folks with prominent/plump labia. It’s still not a serious powerhouse of a vibe – if you can only get off with the Magic Wand or Doxy, don’t expect this to work miracles. It’s also expensive, at £199 before any Black Friday or Holiday sales.

But there are plenty of pros, too: This toy is actually innovative, something we rarely see in the industry. They took suggestions from consumers and made it not only more powerful but also more comfortable and adjustable. I think it lends itself to more than just partnered penetrative sex, meaning it’s not as much of a unitasker as you might think upon first glance. If you want to get extra creative and you’re into power play, I could see the Sync being used as part of tease-and-denial. Finally, the Sync is backed by the We-Vibe warranty, and they have fantastic customer service.

Overall, this is the best sex toy marketed to couples that I’ve ever tried, and I’m legitimately impressed with the design changes that We-Vibe made. It’s a bit of a novelty, sure, but there’s definitely a place for it on my favorites shelf.
